Powering the Future from the Earth
Kenya’s geothermal potential is estimated at 10,000 MW, though current assessments suggest a range between 7,000 MW and 10,000 MW. This vast resource is primarily located within the Great Rift Valley, where high temperatures are accessible at relatively shallow depths.
Current Capacity and Market Position (2025)
- Installed Capacity: As of June 2025, Kenya’s installed geothermal capacity stood at approximately 985 MW to 995 MW.
- Grid Contribution: Geothermal energy is the largest single source of electricity in Kenya, accounting for roughly 47% of total generation.
- Global Standing: Kenya is the largest geothermal producer in Africa and ranks 6th globally, positioning it as a & quot ; geothermal powerhouse".
Future Targets
The Kenyan government has set ambitious growth targets to leverage its untapped potential:
- 2030 Target: Aiming for 5,000 MW of geothermal capacity to support a 100% clean energy grid.
