Reliable Power From Flowing Water
Kenya’s hydropower potential is estimated to be between 3,000 MW and 6,000 MW, with some recent technical assessments suggesting up to 7,800 MW. Despite being the country’s cheapest energy source, less than 30% of this total potential has been developed.
Current Status (December 2025)
- Installed Capacity: As of June 2025, hydropower accounted for 23.97% of Kenya’s total installed capacity, approximately 826 MW to 840 MW.
- Generation Performance: In late 2025, KenGen reported strong output due to favorable reservoir levels, with the Seven Forks system generating 473.14 MW (against an installed 600.4 MW) as of December 8, 2025.
- Climate Vulnerability: While a critical baseload provider, hydropower is highly susceptible to climate change. Recent droughts have led the government to re-evaluate its reliance on water-fed dams in favor of geothermal and wind energy.
Future Projects and Targets
- 2030 Target: Kenya aims to scale hydropower to 1,403 MW by 2030 to support its 100% clean energy goal.
- Modernization: An additional 120 MW could be realized through the upgrading and modernization of existing aging facilities.
